I visited it once in the md-sixties as a small junior. Yes, the smell of the hides in the quick-lime.
My grandfather, owned the chippery Window Lane, was Charles and wife Elizabeth Taylforth. I was born in the USA but my English mother’s family, the Philbins, lived at 66 Lyon St. for decades up to the late 1970’s.

When I was young my Mom would bring us back to Lyon St. to visit her English family, & I remember it well— going to pick bluebells “down the shore”, long walks up to Speke Hall, Sefton Park, Otterspool. It was all so different from the USA & I was enthralled by all of it— from getting fish & chips wrapped up in newspapers from Houghton’s “chippy” on the corner, to feeding the pigeons at the Pier Head & taking the ferry to New Brighton.

I thought the Liverpool people were the friendliest people I’d ever met, & I still do!

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6163780491544995322.post-26827735761330858172023-11-03T21:30:26.951-07:002023-11-03T21:30:26.951-07:00I am absolutely astounded to have found this blog....I am absolutely astounded to have found this blog. As a kid, our days were spent down the shore getting up to allsorts! Biggest thrill was playing on The Eleanor,a cargo ship waiting to be scrapped lying in the mud by the 1st field in 1954. I am very lucky to have survived the crazy things we did,but had the best childhood a kid could possibly get. His name was Brian Mowat, he was a hippy, long hair, very involved in that lifestyle if you catch my drift! He was my absolute hero and he used to tell me stories of working in the bottleworks, he had very fond memories of all his co-workers. He lived in Speke, but my Nana was from Garston. She was raised on Saunby street (number 29 if I remember correctly) her name was Annie Goulden. My uncle Brian passed away in 2013 and I miss him terribly.
