Yesterday (2019)

Loving this "What If" film that features a wonderful cameo moment of a 70 odd living John Lennon. It brought back a special, for me, almost forgotten era of Liverpool, the RAF (my RAF), Harold Wilson, Barbara Castle, Denis Healey. My friend Eric Heffer, a genial Tony Benn. Also though, Uncle Jimmy Brind passionately espousing a caring Socialism and a kinder world we have yet to see.

The film is also great fun, what does he world look like for the "hero" without the Beatles? Actually, from one who knows, you can tell that this was written by someone a little too young to answer that question or maybe it wasn't the question the author asked.

It's not a perfect world of course with its greed, materialism and selfishness but also its a world full of heroism, caring and kindness. Britain may have one of the most dodgy leaders in the world but its people hugely give to those in need all over the world. British humour, come to that American humour too, would lack without the Liverpudlian injection that has occured.

Finally John Lennon led the way in challenging the Vietnam War which had US leaders listened might well have left one the most important nations in the world still riding a much deserved moral high ground. Britain and the US had fought a hugely important war against fascism the gains squandered by wars like Vietnam. Although something of an innocent in politics John got it when it came to wars against the inevitable.

Yesterday the film massively succeeds in bringing some light humour and pathos along with a very sweet love story to our winter of 2019/20. Go and enjoy it.
